The European Researchers’ Night is organised as part of the Reconnecting Science with the Blue Society – Blue-connect 3.0 project, coordinated by the University of Split, with partners including the University of Dubrovnik, University of Zadar, University of Rijeka, University of Pula, University of Rijeka Foundation, Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries, and the Institute for Adriatic Crops and Karst Reclamation.

Both papers address marine litter from complementary perspectives. One analyses innovative technologies for detecting and removing marine litter, focusing on mitigation approaches, while the other examines human behaviour and structural barriers to reducing single-use plastics, focusing on prevention at the source.

Together, the two studies explore marine litter across the prevention–mitigation spectrum, from factors influencing waste generation to technological approaches for dealing with litter already present in the marine environment.

Both papers are closely connected to SeaClear1 & 2.0 project, but in different ways.

In “𝑅𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑒𝑤 𝑜𝑓 𝑖𝑛𝑛𝑜𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑡𝑒𝑐ℎ𝑛𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑑𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑐𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑐𝑟𝑜 𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑜𝑐𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝑓𝑙𝑜𝑜𝑟”, the SeaClear and SeaClear 2.0 systems are identified among relevant emerging technologies that integrate the detection, identification and collection of marine litter from the seafloor.

In “𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑎𝑙 𝑏𝑎𝑟𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝑟𝑒𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑒-𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑠”, the SeaClear 2.0 Communities of Practice played an important role in disseminating the survey across Europe. The study included 525 participants from several European countries, providing data on consumer behaviour, attitudes and structural barriers related to reducing single-use plastics and preventing marine litter at the source.

Another great opportunity for knowledge exchange and strengthening collaboration within European university cooperation!

Following extensive testing at Bistrina earlier this month, the Uvala Lapad demo showcased the system’s performance in a real coastal environment.

As part of the event, we were also delighted to welcome preschool children who visited the site beforehand. Their enthusiasm and curiosity brought additional energy and joy to the event, reminding us of the importance of inspiring the next generation about science, technology, and ocean protection.

The week culminated on 8 June with a 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, showcasing the full capabilities of the SeaClear 2.0 system and the progress achieved through close collaboration among all project partners.

These activities mark another important milestone towards developing advanced technologies for the detection, collection, and management of marine litter, contributing to healthier and more sustainable marine environments.

The theme of the 2026 Science Festival is 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲, highlighting its importance in our everyday lives and future development. This year is especially meaningful, as it also marks the 170𝒕𝒉 𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒂𝒓𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝑵𝒊𝒌𝒐𝒍𝒂 𝑻𝒆𝒔𝒍𝒂’𝒔 𝒃𝒊𝒓𝒕𝒉, 40 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒐𝒃𝒚𝒍 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 80 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒏𝒖𝒄𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒓 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒑𝒖𝒕 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒐 𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏.

During the workshop, Dinka presented the principles of nuclear power plant operation, with special focus on key features of the Krško Nuclear Power Plant. Nora introduced the concept of photovoltaic voltage and explained how it is generated in solar cells.

Students then took part in a hands-on practical session, working with photovoltaic panels. They measured voltage changes as a function of the angle of incoming light, variations in radiation intensity, and the level of panel shading. Using multimeters and a lux meter, they recorded and analyzed their measurements, organized the data into tables, and created graphical representations of their results.

It was a valuable opportunity for students to connect theory with real-world applications of energy transformation.

Combining dedication with a great environment, the team worked on-site, collecting valuable insights and pushing the project forward—proving that even sunny days can be productive when you’re passionate about your work.

Students from 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade explored the fascinating world of autonomous robotics with the help of LARIAT team members Ivana, Vicko, and Ante.

Throughout the morning, they learned how robots work, tested their skills by operating a drone simulator, navigated an underwater robot on a mission to place a plastic bottle into a recycling bin, and discovered how drone thermal cameras function.

It was a day filled with curiosity, learning, and lots of fun!
